Bubble curtains used as barriers across horizontal density stratifications

چکیده

Bubble curtains are multiphase line plumes that used to reduce buoyancy-driven flows between two water zones at different densities. They similar air curtains, plane turbulent jets, installed in doorways of buildings climatically environments. In this study, we establish a formal analogy bubble and unify the frameworks for their description had previously been used. By means small-scale laboratory experiments conducted channel with freshwater brine solutions, study how effectively curtain acts as separation barrier wide range density differences well fluxes depths. Qualitatively, regimes operation identified optimum operating conditions on basis quantitative measurements theoretical considerations. We develop model calculate infiltration flux dense across is very good agreement experimental yields upper limit effectiveness curtain. also mixed fluid around curtain, provide scaling law horizontal extent theoretically predict inside these zones. discuss models derived from our apply real-scale are, example, ship locks.

Do ecological communities disperse across biogeographic barriers as a unit?

Biogeographic barriers have long been implicated as drivers of biological diversification, but how these barriers influence co-occurring taxa can vary depending on factors intrinsic to the organism and in their relationships with other species. Due to the interdependence among taxa, ecological communities present a compelling opportunity to explore how interactions among species may lead to a s...

Bubble Curtains: Herbivore Exclusion Devices for Ecology and Restoration of Marine Ecosystems?

Herbivorous fishes play a critical role in maintaining or disrupting the ecological resilience of many kelp forests, coral reefs and seagrass ecosystems, worldwide. The increasing rate and scale of benthic habitat loss under global change has magnified the importance of herbivores and highlights the need to study marine herbivory at ecologically relevant scales. Currently, underwater herbivore ...

Information Extraction across Linguistic Barriers

Information extraction (IE) systems have been tailored to extract fixed target information from documents in a fixed language. In order to be truly useful for information analysts, the target information must be user-definable and the source documents should cover multiple languages. We will map out the path toward such open-target multilingual IE systems, identifying necessary technological br...
